Binapani Ashram had a humble beginningas an educational support system with  five little tribal children in a mud house in 1991 under the personal patronage of Barka and Manjuree Saren . At present, it can  now boast to  accommodate more than fifty resident girls, studying in different schools and colleges. Manjusree from a very young age questioned the inequalities and discriminations in the society. She used to be disturbed with the way the indigenous tribal people in and around Santiniketan were marginalized. One of the main reasons for sidelining and marginalization , she gathered was lack of formal education.

The manifestation of that internal urge to work for these hapless people to bring them to mainstream of the society has led  to the establishment of the present educational support with the help from a large number of people from different places in India and abroad. The name of the institution is after the name of Manjusree’s mother  Late Binapani Bhattacharya, who had been a constant support and strength behind the Saren couple. The girls who could dream of entering the school gate are now walking in the corridors of higher education.

Once in week, a qualified medical practitioner attends the poor patients of the village as well as the resident girls of Binapani hostel at the Binapani Ashram clinic. This arrangement has been made possible with the assistance from Bharat Sevashram Sangha (Bolpur branch) for last five years.

Free medicines are distributed as far possible as per prescriptions of the doctors. Medicine are usually donated by some doctors practicing at different places.. We desire to extend medical and health care facilities to more people in future. In the last calendar year 2008 nearly 800 patients were attended at the Ashram clinic and medicines worth around Rs.2 0.000.00 were distributed among the poor patients.

Providing hostel accommodation, free health care for poor Santhal tribal school going girls and students of other backward communities. Binapani Ashram even before its registration as a Trust body in March, 1997 was involved in accommodating school going tribal girls and students from underprivileged families for their formal education in govt. aided primary and secondary schools.

Besides the girls from the poor families there are few orphan children who are also growing up with other students in the same hostel. At present there are 50 resident girls of different age group studying in either primary, secondary or in higher secondary courses in and around Bolpur sub-divisional town. Most of the resident girls hail from extremely poor families. In fact, the very idea of going to school with other privileged children had always been a day dream for these helpless lot. For each girl there is a sponsor’s support which helps them to enjoy free accommodation, food and health care services to attend school. Through this kind of sponsorships by large number of people a beautiful relationship has emerged between the girl and her sponsor through our institution.

We are proud to say that the first batch of tribal girls who came to us for assistance were admitted to primary school about 8 to 10 years back have passed Madhyamik and Higher Secondary Examination between 2005-2009. They have successfully passed the examination and are now studying in Higher Secondary or undergraduate courses in school and colleges in Kolkata and Bolpur. Admiration for their performance came from different places and even the MIC Higher Education. Govt. of West Bengal congratulated the girls and awarded them book prizes for their performance.

Nursery School for the Underprivileged children of the village. This is one of the major areas of academic activities of Binapani Ashram. We run a Nursery School of nearly 40 to 60 children of 3 to 6 years age group with mid day meal and health care facilities..
 
Our object is to make these children literate through reading, writing of introductory pictorial texts, nursery rhymes, music and games. The children are admitted to the local Govt. aided Primary school for further formal education at proper age. This is one of our most valued project where we are getting 100% positive feed back from the children and their parents.
